HONZEN Bali

I found this to be one of the safest choice for Japanese food in the area that offers the widest range of Japanese food to suit everyone mood - fish, meat, raw, grilled, noodles ….

Honzen and Sumizen are in the same area/ complex but offering different style of Japanese. The ambiance is classically serene and quiet. It was a good refuge from the rain outside.

The service is professional and very well staffed that they get confused who took the orders and who were supposed to pour the drink. However, they are so well trained that they’d jump out from the register area to help you the moment you started pouring for the table.

The food is good and fresh.

Terrible service that ruined my appetite.
This is a high-price restaurant, but only the quality of the food and the beautiful appearance of the restaurant somehow match this price.

Here are just a few examples of what went wrong:

- when we ordered, the waitress said that it was already too much (this is normal practice, waiters usually know the portion size better, etc.) BUT even after we said that this was a normal order for us - she continued to insist that there was a lot of it, we had to persuade her to accept the order until the end.

- everything needs to be asked several times: a straw for a cocktail, an extra cup for tea (Initially, the cup was brought only to my husband), even extra soy sauce for sushi needs to be asked several times.

- was I personally served even worse because I'm a woman? Yes. The dialogue was conducted exclusively with my husband, they asked him what to bring and when, if it was tasty for him, and so on. It got to the point that my husband was asked if they could replace his plate, he had already finished one course and was waiting for the next one. At the same time, I was still eating my food, but they didn't ask me and just slipped a new plate right under my arm while I was eating.
Some waiters don't even know how to address women, I've heard "sir" addressed to me several times (I don't look like a man, btw)

- in the end, I completely lost my appetite and patience, freaked out, my HUSBAND was asked what was wrong (although it was more obvious that it’s me who is boiling already), I said that I would explain everything to the manager.
My husband was finishing his meal, I was just sitting there. After a while, an incomprehensible man came and said that there were other empty tables and he could transfer us (what? While we’re eating the last dish in the order? Wanted to move us further so that fewer people can see how you ruined my mood?) husband asked a man to introduce himself, only after that he introduced himself as the manager.

We paid, got out, talked to manager. Heard a lot of words back, but don’t think he will change anything. So I would prefer to avoid this place despite the excellent food, because the service and attitude in this restaurant will still be too low.

Exclusive ambience and food taste, the food tasted clean & clear more authentic that the other Japan mass restaurants in Jakarta. And they also offer discount for JCB Card Holder, so worth to try.

Really good Japanese food and excellent service. It’s a sweet balance of quality and accessibility. Good vegetarian options which I really appreciated.

There’s a lot of okay Japanese restaurants around but it’s not common to find spots that hit the next level of taste and freshness. Honzen achieved that for us.

Cost was about 1M rp.for a family of 3 which was worth it.

We dined here during our stay at Ayana Resort and wow it was amazing! We had the Omakase Sushi menu which was outstanding, showcasing many delicacies we had never tried before such as Blowfish and Albalone. The chef, Takumi Kimura meticulously prepared everything in front of us with the help of his assistant's. The service was impeccable with our waiter explaining everything to us and communicating to the chef in Japanese, very impressive! The whole experience was one of the best Japanese meals we have ever had and lovely to have the manager Putra check in to make sure we were enjoying our evening. Highly recommend!

The service was horrible
I ordered a meal with rice separately and told them kindly to bring it at the same time
My meal came surprisingly fast but my rice took another more than forty minutes to come although the food was still very good I am strongly disappointed

13 years may have past but the food is still amazing at Zen. We had a wonderful night with new and old friends - we will return again. Next time we will not wait so long!

Only Japanese restaurant I would recommend in Bali. Everything was perfect. A little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for.

Amazing & attentive service paired with delicious food. 10/10 would recommend to anybody visiting AYANA Resort & Spa or the Jimbaran area. We had a set menu dinner as part of the Luxury Escapes voucher offer for our accomodation. The sashimi melts in your mouth, tempura vegetable + crab/prawn was tasty and the teriyaki chicken was even better. Bali Sea cocktail is as pretty as it tastes.

What a beautiful culinary experience. If you love and appreciate Japanese cuisine and aren’t chasing the instagram worthy scenery, don’t overlook this gem. You’ll be presented with beautiful, delicate and restrained looking options, yet every bite is an absolute taste sensation. The produce is clearly carefully selected and treated with respect. And the cocktails…. Delicious. Everything here is prepared in authenticity of Japanese cuisine. The restaurant itself deserves to be upgraded beachfront but the fact it is hidden away is also a reflection of restrained Japanese culture. Seek and you will find. Simple yet intimate. A must at Ayana Resort, Jimbaran. The staff as always do not go unmentioned. Hardworking, respectful and forever grateful.

After eating at Rock bar and being very underwhelmed, Honzen was a breath of fresh air! Food was super tasty and the prices were balanced in comparison to rock bar. We ordered the chicken karaage, japchae, caterpillar roll and yakiniku Don. All dishes were delicious. With no alcohol the bill came to $50 CAD

I’ve just returned to my room after having eaten at Honzen. The food was not good. We ordered three soups and they were either too salty or too bland. The spicy seafood soup was not spicy at all and only had a few tiny bits of prawn and squid in it. Most of it was cabbage and tofu. It looked nothing like the picture. My dad’s soup was so salty that we had to ask for hot water to add to it and even then it was still too salty. The service was slow. They brought out one bowl of soup at a time so the three of us had to take it in turns to eat while the others waited. For the price they charge, the service and food need to be a lot better.

The chef was so enchant! Im in love with Teppan Yaki Ten at Honzen Bali. Perfect well done wagyu & yummy Lobster!

Love this place!

I ordered teppanyaki (ten) for both of us since the waiter kindly suggest us this menu. Good food, good attraction from the chefs, and good hospitality from them all.

It was really an outstanding honeymoon experience already in Ayana, and more from Honzen.
